FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - James Mallory rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Central Connecticut State over Sacred Heart 49-14 in Northeast Conference play Saturday. The Blue Devils (7-4, 4-3 NEC) accounted for 337 of their 438 total yards of offense on the ground, and rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead. Eric Richardson added 89 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Sacred Heart (8-3, 4-3) finished with its first winning season since 2004, but struggled from the onset, falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter. Josh Vargas scored for 1-yard out at 11:28 of the quarter and Mallory added a 7-yard touchdown run to give Central an early lead. The Blue Devils doubled their margin in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run from Richardson and a 31-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Hunter Wankert to Jermaine Roberts . Mallory and Richardson added touchdown runs in the third quarter, on 18- and 3-yard runs, respectively, to extend the lead to 42-0. Sacred Heart backup quarterback Ray Sheehan threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mark Uyeno with 10:06 left in the game to end the Blue Devils ' shutout bid, and the Pioneers avoided being held scoreless for the first time all season. Vargas capped off Central's scoring with 3:30 to play on a 1-yard run, making it 49-7 after the extra point kick. Sheehan, who was 19-of-34 passing for 214 yards and three interceptions, threw a 23-yard scoring strike to Steve Tedesco with 1:54 left to complete the scoring. Central, which allowed only 35 rushing yards against SHU, has won five straight against the Pioneers and leads 7-4 all-time in the series. |
