QB denies sex charge Marinovich says he's innocent in assault casePosted: Wednesday May 03, 2000 11:50 AM
LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Avengers quarterback Todd Marinovich said he was wrongly accused in a sexual assault case. "My attorney has advised me not to comment, but my gut feeling tells me I must respond to the accusation, did I do it?" Marinovich said Thursday after practice at West Los Angeles College. "Absolutely not is my answer. Anyone who knows me knows this couldn't be further from the truth. That's all I have to say." Marinovich, 30, declined to answer a question on how the charge arose. Marinovich reported on time for an 8:30 a.m. quarterbacks meeting, then practiced with his Arena Football League teammates for a little more than two hours. "He seems focused," coach Stan Brock said. "He threw fairly well in practice for coming off a day off. Being on the practice field with his teammates is a nice place for him to be when he has a lot of problems." Brock said he never thought Marinovich would fail to show up for practice. "I knew he would be here and fully expected him to be here," Brock said. "I would have fined him if he wasn't here." Marinovich's teammates voiced their support for him. "He's a teammate of ours -- once a teammate, always a teammate," said Victor Hall, a lineman and team captain. "We're supporting him. That's what we have to do." The assault allegedly occurred early that morning at his Marina del Rey apartment. Marinovich, released on $50,000 bail, is scheduled for arraignment May 16 in Culver City Municipal Court.
