Barnstorming! Iowa beats Tampa Bay on Horacek's six TD grabsPosted: Friday May 26, 2000 02:28 AM
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- With their most famous alum watching, the Iowa Barnstormers finally climbed above .500. Mike Horacek caught a team-record six touchdown passes and Iowa made two brilliant defensive stands in beating the Tampa Bay Storm 52-34 Thursday night. The Barnstormers improved to 4-3 with a victory that came on a night the team retired the jersey No. 13 worn by Kurt Warner, the Super Bowl MVP with the St. Louis Rams. Warner and his family saw a game that featured sensational performances by Horacek and quarterback Aaron Garcia but was slowed by 23 penalties. Garcia and Horacek teamed up on scoring passes of 9, 10, 13, 14 and 3 yards as the Barnstormers took a 35-20 halftime lead. Horacek's 11-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter completed the scoring. The six touchdown receptions broke the Iowa record of five set last year by Kevin Swayne against Nashville. Horacek tied Swayne's record of six touchdowns scored in a game. Garcia, who also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Carlos James, completed his first 10 attempts and finished 23-of-39 for 278 yards and no interceptions. Horacek had 13 catches for 185 yards. Iowa twice stopped Tampa Bay after the Storm drove to the 1-yard line. John Motton blocked Justin Skinner's 24-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the first half and James' end zone interception denied the Storm after a sequence in which there were five penalties in seven snaps. Kevin Kaesviharn's leaping interception in the end zone stopped another Tampa Bay drive. Tampa Bay's John Kaleo finished 22-of-34 for 273 yards and five touchdowns.
