BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Birmingham is set to get one of the eight charter teams in the new XFL football league.

"It appears at this point that Birmingham will be awarded a franchise in August," said Gene Hallman, CEO of the Alabama Sports Foundation.

The XFL is jointly owned by NBC and the World Wrestling Federation.

Three of the league's eight cities have already been announced: Chicago, Memphis and Orlando.

Hallman said that Birmingham will likely be the last of the eight teams publicly announced, but the franchise is expected to be the first to unveil its nickname, logo, and team colors.
