LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Meet the Los Angeles Xtreme.

"We think 'X' is a cool letter," said John McKay Jr., general manager of the new XFL franchise as the team introduced its name, blue-silver-and-gold color scheme and logo at the Biltmore Hotel on Thursday.

The new professional football league jointly owned by World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc. and the NBC television network begins play Feb. 3.

The name was chosen from a list of 53 choices, according to Joann Klonowski, the team's vice president of marketing. Focus groups of boys aged 13-16 and men and women evaluated the potential nicknames.

Al Luginbill will coach the Xtreme. Luginbill was born in Pomona and got his coaching start at Pasadena City College. He has coached the Amsterdam Admirals of the NFL Europe League for the past five seasons.

Luginbill, 53, led the Admirals to a 30-20 record, with the 30 victories ranking third among NFL Europe coaches.

"I have been following the formation of the XFL closely," he said. "I believe the football on the field is going to be first class, and I am happy to get in on the ground floor of this league."
