EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Every dog has its day, but that day has passed for the New Jersey Red Dogs.

The Arena Football League team has been sold to Miami lawyer James Ferraro, who will change the name of the franchise to the Gladiators. The team will still play its home games at Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands.

The Star-Ledger of Newark, citing unnamed league sources, reported that Ferraro bought the team for about $5 million from former owner E. Burke Ross, a Morristown businessman.

Ferraro is a successful personal injury lawyer who has made millions handling asbestos cases.

The Gladiators will be one of 19 arena league teams when the season opens April 14.

Indoor league considers Dayton team

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Arena Football2 is considering an application from a Rochester, N.Y., group that wants to place a team in the Nutter Center at Wright State University for the 2002 season.

A decision is expected by mid-March.

AF2 is about to launch its second season with 28 teams, mostly in smaller markets in the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast. The league is an offshoot of the 15-year-old Arena Football League.

North American Sports of Buffalo, N.Y., which already owns the Arena Football League's Buffalo Destroyers and AF2's Rochester Brigade, submitted the bid to bring a team to the Nutter Center.

Huntington team named: River Cities Locomotives

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Huntington's National Indoor Football League team will be called the River Cities Locomotives.

The team unveiled a silver-and-gray steam engine logo Thursday at the Huntington Civic Arena, where it will play its home games.

The team will open the season March 30 at Alexandria, La. Its first home game will be April 21 against Wheeling.

The Locomotives will be coached by Melvin Cunningham, a former Marshall defensive back.

New England women's pro team moving to Boston

BOSTON (AP) -- The New England Storm is moving the women's professional football team from Providence to Boston for the upcoming 2001 season.

The team said Thursday it is negotiating with several stadiums and will announce its final choice for a home stadium in the next three weeks.

The team will also be announcing the date of its first team tryouts, which will be held at East Boston Stadium. A second tryout will follow in Hartford, Conn.

The 10-game season for the Women's Professional Football League team starts July 21.

Cobras to train and practice at Dorton Arena

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Cobras have reached an agreement making Dorton Arena at the State Fairgrounds their home training camp and practice facility.

The team will renovate offices and locker rooms at the state-run arena before moving in next month. Cobras owner Roddy Jones and agriculture department representatives finished the arrangement Tuesday.

Last season, the Cobras held their training camp at Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville and spent most of their practice time in the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh.

The Cobras open their preseason against the Oklahoma Wranglers March 26th in Fayetteville.
