STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Los Angeles Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox was picked as the XFL's inaugural Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The former UCLA star, who had three stints in the NFL, led the XFL with 2,186 passing yards and 18 touchdown passes. The Xtreme won the Western Division championship and play the San Francisco Demons on Saturday for the league title in the Million Dollar Game.

"I strive to be the best at everything I do, so it's great to be rewarded for that," Maddox said in Los Angeles. "I don't think I even thought of this at the beginning of the season. This is a team award as much as it is an individual award.

"Right now, my main concern is to win this Saturday, but this is certainly something I will cherish for a long time."

Maddox was the only XFL quarterback to start all 10 regular season games and threw at least one TD pass in eight of them. He earned weekly player honors in Week 7 when he threw for two scores and rushed for another in the Xtreme's 31-6 win over previously unbeaten Orlando.

He played in the NFL with the New York Giants and Atlanta.

"Tommy has earned everything he gets," Xtreme head coach Al Luginbill said. "He works extremely hard. We are where we are because Tommy has been more proficient at his position than any other quarterback in the league. He's also had some good players around him, but ultimately he's the guy that runs the ship."

Chicago Enforcers running back John Avery, who led the XFL in rushing with 800 yards and in yards per carry (5.3), was runnerup for the award.
