Heatstroke Deaths Since 1995
The National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research (UNC) Annual Survey of Football Injury Research for The American Football Coaches Association, the NCAA and The National Federation of State High School Associations reports 18 heat-related football deaths since 1995. They are:
July 25, 2001  
University of Florida freshman Eraste Autin, 18, dies following a six-day coma. He collapsed while jogging to the locker room after a voluntary summer conditioning session with teammates. The temperature in Gainesville that day was 88 degrees with 72 percent humidity.  
Sept. 4, 2000  
Craig Lobrano, 17, an all-state player for Varina (Va.) High School, collapses less than 30 minutes into a practice and dies two days later. The temperature was 77 degrees with 85 percent humidity. A team trainer said players had been given two water breaks.  
Aug. 17, 2000  
Jeremy Tarlea, 15, a 6-1, 250-pound lineman for Saline (Mich.) High, dies eight days after collapsing during a one-mile, pre-breakfast run. He suffered liver and kidney failure and severe neurological damage related to heat stroke. He took himself out of the run twice upon feeling ill but collapsed at the finish line.  
Aug. 15, 2000  
Michael King, a 6-4, 307-pound sophomore tackle for the University of Indianapolis, dies after practice from heat stroke and an enlarged heart. He complained of exhaustion and did not feel better following a cold shower and administering of fluids. The temperature was 84 degrees, and King had a body temperature of 110.  
Aug. 13, 2000  
Preston Birdsong, 18, a 5-11, 190-pound defensive back for Tennessee Tech University, collapses and dies while running wind sprints. Attempts at the scene to resuscitate him failed. The temperature was around 80 degrees.  
Aug. 28, 1999  
Marcus Ellison, 15, dies after a month-long hospitalization stemming from his collapse during the first practice of the season. Officials described the cause of death as a "heat-related injury."  
Aug. 8, 1999  
An unidentified 14-year-old high school player was hospitalized when he collapsed after practice. His death was classified as "heat-related."  
Aug. 25, 1998  
Daniel Bell, 13, an incoming freshman for St. John's College High School in suburban Washington, D.C., dies seven days after going into seizure during practice. The temperature was 92 degrees when he collapsed.  
Aug. 18, 1998  
Two Kansas high school players die from heat exhaustion just hours apart. Matthew Whittredge, 15, played for Circle High School in Towanda, Robert "Alex" Barrett, 17, for Wichita Southeast High 30 miles away. Temperatures that day exceeded 100 degrees.  
Aug. 11, 1998  
Max Draughon, 17, of Autryville (N.C.) Triton High School, considered one of the fittest players on the team, dies from heat stroke. The 6-3, 285-pound lineman reached a 107-degree body temperature.  
Aug. 11, 1997  
Norris "Butch" Theriot III, an 18-year-old offensive lineman for Breaux Bridge (La.) Senior High School, dies after a workout in which he complained to coaches of feeling "weary and ill." The family later sued, claiming the school "did not provide an adequate, cool and/or safe physical plant."  
Aug. 14, 1996  
Donald Ray Roventini Jr., 16, dies about five hours after a workout at Pasadena (Tex.) Dobie High School. He told trainers he was not feeling well after running the field near the end of practice.  
July 17, 1996  
An unidentified semi-professional player, 26, died in his sleep following a two-hour practice. The cause of death was a seizure brought on by heat stroke.  
Aug. 26, 1995  
Kevin Dowling, 17, a Mt. Carmel (Ill.) High School guard, dies 16 days after collapsing from heat stroke following practice. He suffered liver failure and cardiac arrest.  
Aug. 25, 1995  
Kendrick Fincher, 13, a 6-2, 240-pound player for Elmwood (Ark.) Junior High School, dies 18 days after collapsing on the first day of conditioning. About two hours after the workout he reportedly became combative, started vomiting and seemed to be dehydrated.  
Aug. 19, 1995  
An unidentified 14-year-old high school player collapsed and died after practice from heat stroke.  
Aug. 16, 1995  
Marcus Sentress, 16, of Nashville (Tenn.) Maplewood, dies three days after collapsing during practice. An autopsy showed he suffered from heat stroke and enlargement of his heart.  
Aug. 14, 1995  
LaMont Campbell, 16, starting wide receiver and defensive back Fostoria (Ohio) High School, dies after practice of asthma, brought on by high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s.
