ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk was voted the NFL's Most Valuable Player by the Professional Football Writers Association and Pro Football Weekly on Wednesday.

Faulk, previously selected The Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year, also won that honor in voting by members of the PFWA who regularly cover the NFL.

The defensive MVP was Michael Strahan, who was the AP's Defensive Player of the Year. The New York Giants' defensive end set a league record with 22 1/2 sacks.

Strahan and Faulk also were the only unanimous choices for the AP All-Pro Team.

Dick Jauron and Garrison Hearst won the same awards from the PFWA as they did in the AP balloting. The Bears' Jauron was chosen coach of the year, while 49ers running back Hearst was the comeback player of the year.

Kendrell Bell was selected the overall rookie of the year -- he was the AP's Defensive Rookie of the Year, an honor the Pittsburgh linebacker also received from the PFWA. Bears running back Anthony Thomas duplicated his AP honors by winning the PFWA offensive rookie award.

Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart was voted the league's most improved player. Rams general manager Charley Armey won executive of the year, while Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey was the assistant coach of the year.

Broncos fullback Griffith retires

DENVER (AP) -- Outstanding blocking fullback Howard Griffith has told the Denver Broncos he's retiring after missing the 2001 season with a pinched nerve in his neck.

Griffith, whose retirement was announced Wednesday by the Broncos, spent 11 years in the NFL and played on Denver's Super Bowl championship teams in 1997 and 1998.

He was drafted by Indianapolis in 1991 and was on the Buffalo Bills' and San Diego Chargers' practice squads in 1991-92. He played two seasons each for the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams before joining the Broncos in 1997.

Griffith was the only fullback in NFL history to block for five single-season 1,000-yard rushers: Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson of the Broncos; Jerome Bettis of the Rams and Anthony Johnson of the Panthers.

"He was a consistent, tough football player who was responsible for a lot of the yards that the tailbacks gained," Broncos general manager Neal Dahlen said in a press release.

Broncos spokesman Paul Kirk declined to say whether Griffith was retiring because of the neck injury. Griffith's agent, Mark Bartelstein, did not immediately return telephone messages.

Griffith was put on injured reserve last August after being injured.

He played in 121 career games, starting 87. He rushed for 351 yards and three touchdowns on 121 carries. He also caught 123 passes for 850 yards and nine touchdowns.

Man pleads guilty to holdup of Packers WR Bradford

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A man admitted Wednesday he held up Green Bay Packers wide receiver Corey Bradford and another man in a gunpoint robbery outside a Milwaukee restaurant.

Vernon Farr, 21, entered guilty pleas in Milwaukee County Circuit Court to two counts of armed robbery and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In exchange, District Attorney Lovell Johnson agreed to drop one charge of possession of cocaine and one charge of obstructing an officer.

Bradford, defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt and a third man, Rdre Manning, were held up in the parking lot of a Mr. Perkins restaurant on Oct. 16.

"You approached Corey Bradford, held a gun to his chest, demanded his money and anything in his pockets?" Judge Jean DiMotto asked Farr.

"Yes, ma'am," he replied.

Farr also admitted pointing the semiautomatic weapon at Manning to obtain his necklace, earrings, cellular telephone and $175 in cash. Farr was not charged with holding up Hunt.

He could face up to 125 years in prison when he is sentenced March 8. Johnson and Farr's lawyer, Dan Mitchell, submitted a joint request seeking 10 years in prison with 15 years of extended supervision.

Dolphins FB Dyer, DT Grant undergo surgery

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Dolphins fullback Deon Dyer and defensive tackle Earnest Grant both underwent successful surgeries Wednesday.

Dyer had an operation to remove bone spurs and fragments remaining from a broken right hand in the preseason and to remove fragments from his right shoulder joint. Dyer appeared in all 16 games this past season, but had no rushes or receptions. He returned two kickoffs for 24 yards.

Grant underwent surgery to remove fragments from his right shoulder joint. He made three starts this past season and finished with 22 tackles.

Woman accused of embezzling money from Merediths

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- A woman was indicted on charges of embezzling more than $20,000 from former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith and his wife.

Vicki Kaye Barbo, a 50-year-old from Glorieta, faces one count of embezzlement of more than $20,000 and 12 counts of forgery during a three-year period beginning in July 1998.

The charges against Barbo, who prosecutors say handled accounting for the Merediths, stem from checks drawn on the Merediths' account at the Bank of Santa Fe, according to the indictment.

Meredith and his wife, Susan, could not be reached for comment.

Cindy Turcotte, Barbo's lawyer, said Tuesday she had not seen the Jan. 11 indictment and could not comment.

Barbo, who has not been arrested, will be issued a summons to appear for arraignment Feb. 11 before state District Judge Michael Vigil, Deputy District Attorney Barbara Romo said.

Barbo was employed by them for eight years, Romo said.

The indictment alleges Barbo forged a $28 check on the Merediths' account May 4, 2000, and subsequent forgeries increased. The checks totaled $21,805, according to the indictment.

Meredith played in the NFL from 1960 to 1968 and was the league's most valuable player in 1966. Meredith, a native of Mount Vernon, Texas, then joined ABC's Monday Night Football, teaming with Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford.
