Tuesday Roundup Redskins cut five-time Pro Bowl returner BatesPosted: Tuesday March 12, 2002 8:08 PMUpdated: Wednesday March 13, 2002 12:46 AM ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins cut five-time Pro Bowl kick returner Michael Bates on Tuesday to save money under the salary cap. The move will save the team about $750,000 under this year's cap. Bates signed a two-year, $1.3 million contract a year ago. Bates was one of five players the Redskins left exposed in last month's expansion draft, but he was not selected by Houston. Carolina cut Bates for the same reason last year, even though he had made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances with the Panthers. Bates averaged 23.5 yards last season with the Redskins.
Jim Brown's surrender pushed back one dayLOS ANGELES (AP) -- Former football star Jim Brown will begin serving a 180-day misdemeanor jail term Wednesday following a judge's decision to push the sentence back a day. Judge Dale Fischer agreed Tuesday to a request by Brown's attorney to push the surrender back one day. The Pro Football Hall of Fame running back was not present. Brown was sentenced to jail in January 2000 for refusing court-ordered counseling and community service for vandalizing his wife's car in 1999. Brown appealed and remained free on his own recognizance. The appellate court eventually affirmed the trial court's ruling. "He has lost on all grounds, and now he has to serve 180 days in jail," said Deputy City Attorney Grace Lee. "Steps they [Brown's lawyers] take are another form of delay." The court ordered Brown to appear Wednesday morning at the downtown Criminal Courts Building.
