South Beach Sage Redskins deal Rosenfels to Dolphins for 2003 draft choicePosted: Thursday August 22, 2002 7:45 PMUpdated: Friday August 23, 2002 3:26 PM
ASHBURN. Va. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier's quarterback situation got a little clearer Thursday, with the Washington Redskins trading Sage Rosenfels to the Miami Dolphins. The Redskins got an undisclosed 2003 draft choice in return for Rosenfels, a fourth-round pick in 2001. The deal leaves Spurrier with three quarterbacks: Danny Wuerffel, Shane Matthews and first-round pick Patrick Ramsey. All three will make the team, with Wuerffel and Matthews still vying for the starting job. Wuerffel is scheduled to play the first half Saturday against Tampa Bay, and Matthews is set to work most or all of the second half. Rosenfels, who had clearly fallen behind Wuerffel and Matthews in Washington, should upgrade the Dolphins' No. 3 quarterback position behind starter Jay Fiedler and backup Ray Lucas. In three preseason games, the former Iowa State standout was 32-of-54 for 476 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.
Rosenfels will battle Zak Kustok for the back-up spot in Miami. Kustok was 6-of-13 for 63 yards with an interception in the
first preseason game. Tim Levcik, who was 5-of-22 for 61 yards with
two interceptions in the second game, was waived on Friday.
