Reactions Users have differing opinions on Parcells-Jones talksPosted: Friday December 27, 2002 3:22 PMSI's Peter King and Don Banks went Head2Head over the Bill Parcells-Jerry Jones potential union. Here's what users had to say:
This is an easy question. They will make it work for one reason. They both hate to lose. Parcells' divorce has left him a little light in the pocket and although TV is easy, it doesn't pay $4 million a year for 5 years. The Cowboys are in a division with Philly and Washington that will have winning teams because the owners willing to pay. Jerry Jones will not be out done in his own division.
Give it a try, Parcells has a Pro-Class about him we need out here in "Fandom." Mr. Jones is what we call a "go-getter", and I respect him. However all owners should stay in the skybox and lend moral support to the team!!
I believe the relationship will not work as Jerry Jones will not totally relinquish on-field personnel handling to the head coach. Although Bill denies he needs control of personnel, that was the crux of the problem at New England. It's an "ego thing" on both parties' part!
I agree with Don Banks. Tuna is just a stop gap measure. The two egos would certainly bump heads working together. The Cowboys need more stability and that's not going to happen if Tuna comes on board. The only positive coming out of the Jones-Parcells rumor is at least Jerry is thinking of changing his ways. Note that in the "Jones Regime" (14 seasons) Dallas has had seven winning seasons six losing seasons and a .500 year in 1999. Hire Norv Turner.
If there is one thing that I know, it's that Jerry Jones loves his team and the years of frustration have had a humbling effect. Bill Parcells is a go getter and, ego aside, a proven winner who has always had the confidence of any team he's coached. True, both love the limelight, but losing has a way of allowing you to swallow your pride with dignity. It would work and if given authority for choosing personnel, Parcells could have the boys playing in January within 1-2 years. I would hope they (Jones-Parcells) are discussing ways to make it work instead of discussing why it won't.
No Way! Bill Parcells is used to the Mara and Hess style of ownership. They let Bill run the whole show and I thought he even got a part ownership of the Jets when he took the job. He could never handle micro-management or Jerry stepping on his toes. If it does happen I would guess it's less than one season before Bill is back in the broadcast booth.
In this period of free agency, the ability of the coach to coach is more important than ever before -- teams are almost like revolving doors for players. I miss the years when I knew who was playing for the Cowboys every year ... now I rarely know who will be on the team from year to year. Bill Parcels is a good coach, if he is allowed to coach then the Cowboys will win. If he is not allowed to coach, then he won't be a fit. It's that simple in my mind.
I think that Jones wants to win so bad he thinks he can get along with Parcells. But, I agree that Bill is a quick fix and he will not last in Dallas or anywhere for the long haul. He will either win in three years and get out, or more likely, will get frustrated in his lack of success and "retire permanently" again.
I agree with Mr. King. Jerry is tired of losing and needs to fill the seats at Texas Stadium next year. Jerry wants to win, badly, and if it means he has to share some of the limelight to win and make money he will do it. Plus, Dallas needs a coach to come in and discipline they guys on the team.
