ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins have been signing free agents so quickly that owner Dan Snyder had to rotate the pilots who fly the new players in on his jet.

"You don't know what day it is," director of player personnel Vinny Cerrato said Monday. "We've been just going and going. The kids are coming in, you're working, taking them to dinner at night.

"It was go, go, go."

The haul so far is nine players in four days of free agency, including running back Trung Canidate in a trade. The market officially opened Friday at 12:01 a.m., about the time ex-San Francisco guard Dave Fiore boarded Snyder's plane in California and headed east to become signee No. 1.

The signings have come easily. Snyder is offering players so much money they're willing to forgo visits to other teams and sign on the spot. No other team has been anywhere near as active.

"And we're not done yet," Cerrato said.

Since Friday, the Redskins have added Canidate (St. Louis), guard Randy Thomas and kicker John Hall (New York Jets), defensive linemen Regan Upshaw (Oakland) and Brandon Noble (Dallas), and backup quarterback Rob Johnson (Tampa Bay).

Backup offensive lineman Lennie Friedman (Denver) and Tre Johnson (re-signing) were signed Monday, and Rocket Ismail is among several players still being courted.

"Why wait and get lesser guys down the road?" Cerrato said. "Let's get the best and not the worst. You can't get Randy Thomas and Dave Fiore in June."

Snyder has tried this before.

In 2000, his first offseason as an owner, he overspent on aging stars Deion Sanders, Jeff George and Bruce Smith in assembling the most expensive roster in NFL history.

Redskins gone wild! Print the Super Bowl tickets! Let me start by saying that I like Washington owner Dan Snyder's excitement and verve about the NFL's Hot Stove League. In acquiring eight free agents and a ninth player (Trung Canidate) via trade since the free-agent signing period began last Friday, the Redskins have taken steps toward catching one division foe they're close to (the Giants) and another they haven't been able to touch recently (the Eagles). But let me also say that only two of their acquisitions are rock-solid, risk-free picks.

But the signings didn't address the real needs of the team, and the resulting bad chemistry helped make the season an 8-8 flop. The Skins were 8-8 again in 2001 and 7-9 last year, Steve Spurrier's first as head coach.

"Daniel wanted certain marquee players and didn't care whether they were at the ends of their careers or not," said Joe Theismann, the former Redskins quarterback and now a TV analyst. "But, this year, these players are needs, not names."

While the results of the spending spree won't be determined for months, it's not hard to assess the pros and cons of what's happened so far. A rundown:

  • Thomas: The big catch. The top guard available had planned to visit six other teams before Snyder raised the offer to a $28 million over seven years, including a $7 million signing bonus. The Redskins have started 14 different guards over three seasons, and the owner was determined to fix that position right away.

"He must've talked to Jimmy Sexton 50 times," Cerrato said, referring to the agent. "Randy Thomas had six other teams to go to. If we didn't pay him, somebody else was going to pay him that -- or very close to that. So did you overpay? No."

  • Fiore: Fills the other guard spot, but a four-year, $6.5 million contract is quite an investment for someone who had his fifth knee operation a few months ago. The Redskins might have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL in he stays healthy, although minimum wage signings Friedman and Tre Johnson offer some insurance if he doesn't.

  • Canidate: A fourth-round draft pick and guard David Loverne were small prices to pay for a back whose speed and pass-catching ability make him a better fit for Spurrier's offense than the departed Stephen Davis. But, with Davis gone, third-and-1 becomes a lot tougher and Canidate has been fumble prone.

  • Upshaw: A gamble. His best season was six years ago, and his reputation as disruptive locker room presence was reinforced when the Raiders reportedly fined him over a confrontation with an assistant coach. He also had knee surgery last year, but Snyder gave him a four-year, $6.5 million deal to take Smith's starting spot.

  • Noble: Steady, not spectacular. A downgrade from Daryl Gardener, but Gardener wouldn't have returned for the four-year, $7 million deal that Noble got.

  • Hall: A huge need. The Redskins' 11th kicker since 1998, Hall should solve that instability with a five-year deal with about $7 million.

  • Rob Johnson: He'll get $2 million over two years to back up Patrick Ramsey.

The Redskins still need a safety, a speed receiver and another defensive lineman, although those positions could be a focus of the draft. They've managed to fit under the salary cap because Thomas' deal is the only real blockbuster, and it's spread over seven years to minimize the impact.

"That's what free agency is all about -- it's overspending," Theismann said. "They've addressed their immediate needs and problems from last year. Dan couldn't afford to let a good offensive lineman get away. I don't think he's acted in haste."
