Texans face more challenging schedule in sophomore season

HOUSTON (AP) -- The NFL rolled out the red carpet for the Houston Texans last year, allowing them to begin their existence with a prime-time home game against their natural geographic rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

The league is doing no such favors for the Texans this time around, pitting the expansion team against five 2002 playoff teams -- including three division winners -- and sending them to steamy Miami for the opener and to Buffalo in mid-November.

Still, head coach Dom Capers put a happy face on the lineup Thursday.

"I like the position of the [Week 5] bye," he said, noting that his staff breaks the season down by quarters, leaving the off-week after the first full quarter of the season.

The lineup has been set in stone for some time in the NFL's new scheduling system, but the actual dates and times weren't released until Thursday. Some highlights of the schedule include:

  • Houston opens its season Sept. 7 in Miami, then travel east again to New Orleans the following week, for the first of its games against the four NFC South teams. Two of those teams -- Atlanta (home, Nov. 30) and Tampa Bay (road, Dec. 14) -- made the playoffs, with the Buccaneers winning it all.

  • Two of the other playoff games are home-and-away affairs against divisional foes Indianapolis and Tennessee, the former Oilers who make their second return to Houston on Dec. 21. The Texans' other playoff matchup comes in an Oct. 19 home game against the New York Jets.

  • The Texans open at home Sept. 21 against the Kansas City Chiefs, then host Jacksonville the following week for their first divisional game.

  • Capers' former team, the Carolina Panthers, visit Nov. 2.

Capers said he was pleased the visit to Cincinnati comes Nov. 9, so the Bengals' new coaching staff will have a track record.

"I like being able to play them in the middle of the season because you have something to work off of," Capers said.

As for the Nov. 16 game at Buffalo, the Texans note they are 1-0 in games under 40 degrees after a 24-6 win at frosty Pittsburgh last year.
