He died Tuesday of cancer. Tolar, nicknamed the "Human Bowling Ball," played with the Houston Oilers from 1960, the first year of the AFL, until 1966. His best season was 1962, when he gained 1,012 yards in 14 games and led the league with 244 carries. For his career, he gained 3,277 yards in 907 carries and rushed for 21 touchdowns. He had 175 passes for 1,266 yards and two TDs. He was voted by fans to the Oilers' 25th anniversary team in the offensive backfield alongside Earl Campbell. Twice an All-AFL pick, Tolar led an adventurous life apart from football, working for noted oil-field firefighter Red Adair during offseasons. Born in Nachitoches, La., Tolar played at Northwestern State, setting scoring records that stood for more than 40 years. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. His widow, Barbara, is a longtime athletic administrator at Rice. A memorial service was scheduled for Thursday in Webster in suburban Houston. Another service will be held Saturday in Natchitoches.
Packers re-sign TE Davis, P BidwellGREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Tight end Tyrone Davis and punter Josh Bidwell re-signed Wednesday with the Green Bay Packers. A seven-year veteran, Davis began last season as the Packers' third tight end, but moved up to primary backup to starter Bubba Franks at midseason. He played in nine games, starting twice, and had nine catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Davis' first catch of the year was a 19-yard touchdown reception in the Packers' 34-21 victory against the Chicago Bears on Oct. 7. Bidwell, a restricted free agent heading into his fourth season, had a 35.7-yard average last season. In 2001, his 36.5 average was the second best in Packers history. A testicular cancer survivor, Bidwell has not had a punt blocked in an NFL regular-season game.
Saints waive veteran G WilliamsNEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Saints waived guard Wally Williams on Wednesday. Williams, entering his 11th season, signed with the Saints in 1999 as an unrestricted free agent. After injuring his knee in training camp, Williams dressed but did not play in the first eight games of the 2002 season. He was then suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy and played in the final four games of the season on special teams.
Bengals re-sign Braham for 2003CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed center Rich Braham to a one-year contract Wednesday. Braham, 32, has been a Bengals starter the past seven seasons, first at guard and then at center. He became an unrestricted free agent after the 2002 season. He is entering his 10th NFL season, after playing college football at West Virginia. Braham started 15 games last season.
Walter awarded $6,000 in lawsuit vs. BentleyCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Tyson Walter of the Dallas Cowboys was awarded $6,000 by a jury Wednesday in a lawsuit against the New Orleans Saints' LeCharles Bentley, who punched him in the face when they were teammates at Ohio State. Walter and Bentley played next to each other in the Buckeyes' offensive line. Walter had sought more than $2 million from Bentley, who started for the Saints as a rookie last season and is considered one of the NFL's best young offensive linemen. Walter said he suffered a broken nose and broken teeth when Bentley sucker-punched him after a workout in February 2000. He also contended the blow caused an infection that spread to his hip and forced him to sit out the following season at Ohio State.
After Walter came back for the 2001 season, he and Bentley played next to each other on Ohio State's line. Walter was a sixth-round pick of Dallas last season.
