Report: Bennett may be out for season Posted: Thursday July 10, 2003 11:14 AMUpdated: Thursday July 10, 2003 6:59 PM
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (Ticker) -- Minnesota Vikings running back Michael Bennett could miss the upcoming season following a setback to his surgically repaired left foot. Bennett had surgery this past spring after injuring the foot in a freak treadmill accident. Citing "sources close to the situation," the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Thursday that the screw Bennett had inserted has broken. According to the report, the decision facing Bennett is to choose a procedure that could get him back on the field late in the preseason, or a safer one that would sideline him for the year. "That's pretty accurate, yeah," Vikings spokesman Bob Hagan said. A first-round pick in the 2001 draft, Bennett was a major factor in the NFL's top rushing game last season, totaling 1,296 of the team's 2,507 yards. He also had five touchdowns on 255 carries. "I talked ot Michael today and I'm excited that he is going to undergo a medical procedure that may give him an opportunity to return at some point during the 2003 season," Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "Our first concern is for Michael's well-being for the long term. This gives an opportunity for the rest of the backs on our team to step up and do what every player wants, and that's to compete."
