Posted: Tuesday July 15, 2003 2:11 AM

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- National talk show host Rush Limbaugh was hired Monday as a commentator for ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown show.

Limbaugh will appear weekly on the show, which makes its season debut Sept. 7.

"Rush is a great communicator and a fan's fan," said ESPN executive vice president Mark Shapiro. "His acute sense of what's on the minds of listeners combined with his ability to entertain and serve as a lightning rod for lively discussion makes him the perfect fit for this new role."

Limbaugh will appear either on the show's studio set or via satellite, where he will provide a weekly opinion piece on an aspect of the NFL making news that week. He also will participate in impromptu exchanges with analysts.

Limbaugh's radio show has an audience of 20 million listeners in 650 markets worldwide. A few years, he was a candidate for a role on ABC's Monday Night Football that ultimately went to comedian Dennis Miller.

Packers sign defensive end, wide receiver

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers have added defensive end Earl Cochran and wide receiver Kamau Peterson to their roster, head coach Mike Sherman announced.

Cochran, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound rookie from Alabama State went undrafted in Thursday's supplemental draft. He posted 173 tackles, 48 1/2 tackles for a loss and 26 sacks. Cochran, 22, a Bessemer, Ala. native, also broke up eight passes, forced five fumbles and recovered seven during his career with the Hornets.

Peterson, a native of Windsor, Ontario, was with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League for the last two seasons. He played in 36 games, totaling 99 receptions for 1,396 yards and seven touchdowns. The 6-foot, 181-pound receiver had signed as a free agent with the New York Jets in February but was waived June 19.

Terms were not released in the announcement, which was made Monday.

Panthers re-sign one, waive four

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers re-signed cornerback Emmanuel McDaniel and released four players Monday.

McDaniel, out of East Carolina, played in 16 games last season. He finished with 31 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He was originally drafted by Carolina in the fourth round in 1996.

The Panthers waived cornerback Adesola Badon, defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi, safety Julian Jones and wide receiver Bashir Yamini.

Fatafehi had three tackles in six games with Carolina in 2002. Jones and Yamini were on the Panthers practice squad.

Badon signed with Carolina in the offseason and played for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe this season.

Bears waive QB Burris

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- The Chicago Bears waived quarterback Henry Burris on Monday.

Burris made his NFL debut with the Bears last season. He played in six games with one start, completing 18 of 51 passes for 207 yards.

The former Canadian Football League player also spent a season as a reserve with the Green Bay Packers.

He also started six games this year for the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe, completing 55 of 99 passes for 589 yards.

Harlan to broadcast Packers' preseason

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers' preseason games will feature a new broadcast team on the statewide television network.

CBS sportscaster Kevin Harlan, son of Packers president Bob Harlan, will provide play-by-play for preseason games, the team and flagship station WFRV said Monday.

Former NFL defensive lineman Bill Maas will return to the booth, and WTMJ sports reporter Jessie Garcia will be on the sidelines.

WFRV sports director Larry McCarren will provide pre-game, halftime and post-game analysis and will continue to be part of the Packers' radio broadcast team with Wayne Larrivee.

S Pagel signs with Jets

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Former Iowa safety Derek Pagel, a fifth-round draft choice, has signed with the New York Jets.

Pagel, a 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from Plainfield, Iowa, was the 140th pick in the NFL draft. He blossomed as a senior at Iowa and impressed scouts with his speed and strength.

The Jets are expected to use Pagel mainly on special teams.

"I want to get myself on every special team possible, show them what they are looking for and contribute," Pagel said. "I'm learning the system and when given a chance, I want to make plays."

Pagel made 154 tackles and intercepted five passes during his Iowa career. Jets assistant coach Mike Westhoff had rated Pagel as the third best defensive back in the draft from a special teams standpoint.

"This is a player who has been a starter for the last year and a half and has been very productive," general manager Terry Bradway said. "He's very smart and had the respect of his coaches at Iowa."

The Jets start training camp next Monday.

Steelers release DT Attieh

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Defensive tackle Roy Attieh was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, reducing their roster to the 82-player limit.

Attieh signed in April as a rookie free agent from Kent State.

Steelers players are to report to training camp in Latrobe on July 25.

Claymores won't renew contracts for Dahlquist, assistant

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- The Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe have decided not to renew the contracts of head coach Gene Dahlquist and defensive coordinator Ray Woodard.

Dahlquist, a former offensive coordinator with the University of Texas, compiled a 15-15 record in three seasons with the Scottish team.

The Claymores failed to make it to the World Bowl -- the developmental league's championship game -- during his tenure.

"We have decided to make a change in direction at the Scottish Claymores football team," said John Beake, the NFL's vice-president of football operations. "This has been a very tough business decision, but we feel that it is time to move in a new direction."

Dahlquist has worked with quarterback Jeff George -- the first overall choice in the 1990 draft -- and Miami running back Rickey Williams in his 30-year coaching career.

Woodard spent four seasons in the NFL as a defensive lineman, playing with the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers in the '80s.
