Brown out Packers look to 'Big Daddy' to replace 'Gravedigger'Posted: Sunday August 10, 2003 11:26 PMGREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Nose tackle Gilbert Brown is out for the season after tearing his right biceps muscle, and the Green Bay Packers hope to replace him with free agent defensive lineman Dan Wilkinson. An MRI conducted Sunday confirmed Brown tore the muscle during the Packers' 27-21 preseason victory Saturday night over Atlanta, head coach Mike Sherman told the Wisconsin State Journal. Brown will have surgery next week. Safety Bryant Westbrook also is done for the season after he ruptured his Achilles' tendon during Saturday's game. Brown was injured in the second quarter when he tried to grab fullback George Layne. "I feel bad for him. He came up and apologized to me that he got hurt, and it's certainly not his fault he got hurt," Sherman told the Madison newspaper. "It's a very freak injury, we've never seen it happen before. It's unfortunate for him and us, but life goes on." Sherman said Wilkinson would visit the team Monday. The Washington Redskins released him July 29 after they tried to sign Brown and Wilkinson refused a pay cut. Wilkinson visited the Detroit Lions last week. Wilkinson, a nine-year veteran and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1994 NFL draft, had a career-low 16 tackles last season and did not record a sack. The Packers will have to add another nose tackle if they can't sign Wilkinson. The Packers played Steve Warren and journeyman Steve Martin after Brown was injured Saturday night. The team activated Warren off the physically unable to perform list after an offseason back injury. The team's other three nose tackles -- Rod Walker, Terdell Sands and James Lee -- have been limited by injuries in camp.
