Super Bowl Q&A with Warren Moon Posted: Thursday January 28, 1999 09:06 AM
Seattle Seahawks quarterback stopped in on CNN/SI's Miami set Wednesday night to offer some perspective into the key matchups in Super Bowl XXXIII on Sunday, as well as his NFL future. Bob Lorenz: Warren, a lot people thought that the Seahawks would be a playoff contender, if not a Super Bowl contender this season. It didn't work out that way, you finished 8-8. But what does the future hold for you, especially now Mike Holmgren has come over from Green Bay? Warren Moon: I have talked with Mike Holmgren, we had a good conversation. He basically wanted to know how I felt about playing this upcoming season. He wanted to know about my physical health. He wanted to know how I felt about changing offenses at this point in my career. We're going to change the entire system. He wanted to know if I still had the desire to play in Seattle after what happened last year. I assured him that all of those things were positive. Now we just have to sit down and talk about my salary situation. Hopefully I will be back in Seattle next season because we have a great team and you bring in a great coach. That's a great combination. BL: Does your role need to be addressed as well? Do you know where you stand or will you have to settle for a backup role or will you have a chance at the starting job? WM: That I am not sure of. He was going to be evaluating film. (Holmgren) has never seen Jon Kitna play before and he wanted to see him on film to see exactly what he has. Hopefully at some time we'll make a decision on whether or not I can compete for the starting job. That is all I really want is a chance to compete. I feel like that if I have a chance to compete against anyone in the NFL, I will come out on top. Ron Meyer: Warren, you look great. How many more years are you going to play, and has coaching ever entered your mind? WM: I take it a year at a time and I've kind of done that for the last five or six years. I look at how well I was the year before, see how productive I was and also my physical health. Right now, I feel great. I want to play again. I don't want to finish my career the way it ended this year. I really am looking forward to playing with Mike and his offense. I really want to see myself for one year in that offense to see how productive I can be. James Lofton: You have been in a lot of different offense and have had a lot of different receivers. Would you go out on a limb and name your favorite receiver that you have played with? WM: I think Cris Carter is the favorite I have played with, only because of his competitiveness. This guy comes to play every day of practice and he takes the same attitude into the game. You really know what you are going to get with him day in and day out. I have played with some great receivers over my career, but because of his intensity, he stands out. BL: The entire Falcons defense did a number on the Vikings two weeks ago. You saw that game. What do you think is going to be trouble for the Broncos? WM: I felt going into that game that Atlanta was the only team that had a chance to beat the Vikings. They are built the same way. They're both built for turf. They're dome teams. Their defenses are built with speed, their linebackers can all run. They have good guys in the secondary. I think they match up well with the Denver Broncos also. The bigger difference is going to be the Broncos are used to playing on grass and the Falcons aren't. They take advantage of the speed of the Astroturf. That is going to be the key -- how well the adjust to playing on grass. This team, they refuse to lose. They are playing with so much confidence right now. They find a way to win somehow. BL: You saw that game, but you saw the Broncos first hand -- you had to play against them. What exactly do you see from the Broncos? They have been tough against the run, the last two games especially. WM: What makes them so good is the first 15 plays of the game. They go right down the field, score two touchdowns and before you know it, you're down 14-0 and you are out of your game plan. Most teams don't run the ball against them because they are always behind. What you have to do is stay close early. If the Falcons can stay close, they have a chance to win this football game. Their confidence will only grow and the pressure of trying to repeat as champions will only grow for the Broncos. JL: One of the obvious things for the quarterback is either having pocket mobility or having the ability to flat-out scramble. We know that John Elway can do that. Can Chris Chandler do that well enough to survive in this game? WM: I think what Chris does is that he moves around well enough in the pocket that he doesn't have to scramble. If he can move around in the pocket and buy himself some more time, he's shown that he can do that. He did a great job of it against the Vikings on that last drive to tie the score. They do a great job with play-action passing and his line does a good job of protecting to him. They keep a lot of people in to protect him also. They take advantage of the things he does best and they stay away from the things he doesn't do best. That's why they play-action pass as much as they do.
