Doctor, doctor, give me the news

The rehabilitation on my knee has been going really well, and I get to go back to Indianapolis this weekend for another round of tests, so teams can see how things have come along. It'll give all 31 teams an update on how I'm recovering -- they'll take X-rays, MRIs, all kinds of medical tests before they're done. The joint feels really strong, and I've been pleased with the way everything is coming back. I'm doing more and more in workouts, jogging and backpedaling, starting to do some cutting and jumping, too. I know I'll be ready for the '99 season -- I want to do this right the whole way back to the field. After the tests in Indianapolis, I'm going home to Virginia for Easter. I haven't been home for but one time since I've been here in California, and that was for less than a day. I've been calling my mom pretty much every day, and it'll be good to get back home. We've got a workout at Virginia on Monday, and I'll continue to work out at school until the draft, and then I'll talk with the team that picks me and see what they think is best to do from there. Draft MailbagDo you feel lucky that Dr. Frank McCue is Virginia's team doctor and that you had the chance to have knee operated on by the best? -- John Pritchett, Orange, Va. Dr. McCue -- he's my main man. I owe him a lot, because he did a great job on my knee. He treats everybody like they were his son -- he's truly a great man. He had done a lot of minor surgeries with me before I hurt my knee, and that made me a lot more comfortable going in. I've followed you for all four years at Virginia, from stuffing Warrick Dunn at the goalline your freshman year up until your last play last year. I just love to watch you play! Do you think you could play cornerback at the pro level? -- Randy Isner, Raleigh, N.C. I think I'm built for the safety position. I don't have the speed of a cornerback -- I'm not slow or anything, but I'm accustomed to playing safety. I haven't played cornerback since my freshman year of high school. I've always thought of myself as a safety/linebacker, so if I were going to change positions, I'd probably play outside linebacker. Dex, do you think that the hit you had on Warrick Dunn in '95 was the biggest single hit in your college career? -- Dave Denton, Charlottesville, Va. People ask me that a lot, but I think my favorite hit came against Wake Forest my freshman year. I hit Marlon Estes on a kickoff -- I hit him flush, ran right through him. That's probably my favorite hit since little league. Dex, not many people really know Virginia coach George Welsh. Could you tell us something about him? -- Lawrence Stutts, Powhatan, Va. I've got the utmost respect for Coach Welsh. People get the wrong impression about him, just because he doesn't talk as much as other coaches. He is a great coach who bends over backwards for his players. We've formed a great relationship in the last few years that I think will last a long time. He's always very straightforward and honest -- whether it's something good or bad, he'll tell you straight, and for that, I have to respect him.
