Rams deal QB Banks for draft picks Posted: Saturday April 17, 1999 03:40 PM
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The Tony Banks era is officially over with the St. Louis Rams. The team traded their former starting quarterback to the Baltimore Ravens during the first round of today's NFL Draft, getting a fifth-round pick this year and a seventh-rounder next year in return. Banks had started since midway through his rookie season in 1996 and had seven touchdown passes and 14 interceptions last year. He lost his starting job when the Rams signed free agent Trent Green. Coach Dick Vermeil was clearly disappointed to see Banks go. During his two years with the team, Vermeil often touted Banks as a future star, and he predicted Banks would compete for a starting job with Scott Mitchell in Baltimore. The Rams had to sign Banks, a restricted free agent, before trading him to Baltimore. The Ravens play at St. Louis in the season opener this September.
