Thrilled to be a Viking Posted: Saturday April 15, 2000 10:54 PM
Former Wake Forest defensive tackle Fred Robbins Jr. was selected by the Minnesota Vikings late in the second round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Robbins was named to the All-ACC Team after a season in which he had 15 tackles behind the line and recorded five sacks. Fred filed this exclusive Draft Day Diary with CNNSI.com just minutes after being notified of his selection by the Vikings at his parent's home in Florida. It was real good to get picked by the Vikings in the second round. I'm just glad that it's over with, but I feel good. I talked to the Vikings director of player personnel, and then Dennis Green called. He just told me that he liked the things I did, and that I'm a great player. He wanted to get started up front with the defensive line. My family was just jumping up and down when I was picked. They were all screaming and real happy for me. They wished me the best. My Dad, my sister, my uncles, my cousins, my grandma, a couple of my friend I played high school ball with were all over at our house watching the draft, so we pretty much had a houseful. We're just trying to have fun. Everybody was in there congratulating me and stuff like that. It's real fun. It's a real dream come true to be drafted in the NFL. It's something that I've always wanted since I was small, so now that it's here I have to make the best opportunity out of it. Before I got the call from the Vikings I was watching the draft from time to time. I was getting a little bit nervous, but when Minnesota called me I made sure I was in front of the TV. This was where I was told I would go -- right around the end of the second round, in the area that they picked me up -- so I'm not disappointed. I'm real happy with how things worked out. I'm not sure right now when I'll go up to Minnesota. I'm still in a little bit of shock. I guess I'll go up there probably at the first chance I get. I know that the Vikings are a great team. I'm happy -- I can't ask for a better place to start off. They feel good about me, so I feel good about them. I'm just anxious to get started. I admire John Randle and I like his intensity and the way he plays. It will also give me a good chance to get to know Chris Hovan better too. We played together down at the Senior Bowl, so it will be opportunity for both of us going there. Chris is a nice guy. We hung out a little bit at the Senior Bowl. He's pretty much an easy-going guy, but he's intense on the field too. He's just a great player. I'm glad I have the chance to play with him too.
