JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Contrary to coach Tom Coughlin's misgivings, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell insists his ailing knee will be in playing shape by Saturday.
"I expect to play," Brunell said Monday.
Brunell is recovering from a strained ligament he sustained during a Dec. 26 game against Tennessee. He threw during practice last Friday.
Coughlin said he was still uncertain what Brunell would do when the Jaguars return to practice Tuesday to prepare for the Miami Dolphins.
"Mark did well" over the weekend, Coughlin said. "But I can't tell you he made any significant progress."
Brunell's teammates continue to operate on the assumption that he will be in the lineup. They also realize the importance of protecting Brunell, who will be at less than 100 percent.
"We understand we have to pick it up," said Ben Coleman, who is replacing injured Tony Boselli at left tackle. "We can't have any hits on him. We've got to limit the pressure we know they're going to try to bring."
