Reactions: Super predictions

Users were split on which team would win the Super Bowl

Posted: Monday January 31, 2000 12:34 AM

Titans fans These fans were surely let down by the Titans' loss in Super Bowl XXXIV. AP

CNNSI.com asked users to tell us who would win the Super Bowl and why. A sample of the most interesting responses follows:

I must admit that the Titans bring an exciting attitude and blue collar bruising style of play characteristic of the Giants in the early 90's. And after that Wycheck Music City Miracle, who wouldn't want to see this miracle go all the way (Buffalo excluded) or deny that there is something magical about how the Titans find ways to win.

All that said, the ball-control, Steve McNair throws-three-passes-a-quarter system is not one that can play catch-up. The Rams will shake off their sluggishness of their NFC Championship game against one of the best defenses in a decade, and make it bombs away. Jevon Kearse has the ability to give the performance legends are made of and stop the Warner-Faulk machine. Maybe someday, but not in his rookie season.

Final Score:
Rams 27
Titans 19
Drew McCulley, Fanwood, N.J.

The only team that can beat the Rams is the Rams themselves. That game back in October where the score was 24-21 in favor of the Titans is testimony to that fact. The Rams will assert themselves and win handily; as for the Titans? They are Kearsed, that is, destined to lose!!
Norman C. Pereira, Chesterfield, Miss.

The Titans used all the luck they had to defeat Jacksonville three times. However, the last game was lost by Jacksonville. Not won by Tenn. St. Louis is not the team under pressure here. This will not be pretty. There's always next year, Tenn.
M.L. McClendon, Charlotte, N.C.

Being a Nashville native, I naturally gravitate to the Titans' contagious and carefree style. I have been completely astounded at the total lack of respect and meaningful input from the media concerning this team. You do not have a 13-3 record by being "lucky", "average", "a team of destiny", or "non-potent" as a team (unless you're Jacksonville or St. Louis- have either of those teams actually played more than two above-.500 teams aside from the Titans this year?) The Titans have worked for and earned every inch of their present stance. They deserved to win. If the media doesn't like the color of their uniforms or their style of play or the state in which they reside, let them say so honestly and be done. To arrogantly and continually disrespect Titans' fans, the players, and the effort they have put forth the past few years is an absolute insult to anyone with an ounce of intelligence. The Titans are "for real"; a term that is often applied to their opponents by shallow-minded "reporters" scratching for a story that is not-so-objective.

The Titans will most likely win on Sunday. The gleam in their eyes, the intensity in their steps, and the determination with which they play- combined with the fact that they are an extremely talented and opposing football team- will boost them above and beyond the Rams, who are coasting in on the shirt-tail of an un-tested and ever-so-slightly cocky quarterback. The Titans beat them once. Since then, the Titans have become a much better and more diverse team. We will beat them again.
Ellison Belt, Cleveland, Miss.

I watched last Sunday's game holding my breath as the Rams were held down offensively for most of the game. But come on, Titans? Their defense can't contain all the Ram's offensive possibilities at once. Tennessee will have a hard time keeping up in the first half with Robertson out. Kearse will have to step up in this game. Still, the only thing that will kill the Rams will be themselves with stupid penalties. Timmerman needs to stay put!
Jeff Kreutz, St. Louis, Miss.

When two basically unknown teams make it to the Super Bowl..go for the kicker, Al Del Greco. I pick the Titans.
James Gillon, Norton, Mass.

Kurt Warner and the Rams have to much speed for the Titans. Faulk will have a game of a lifetime and out run the Titans defense. The Rams defense is to good for the Titans. The front four for the rams will dominate the offensive lineman for the Titans. Steve McNair will not have anytime to do anything. I predict a Rams victory, 35-17.
Walter Frizzell, Grand Rapids, Minn.

How can you pick against Kurt Warner? This guy has forces on his side that border on the supernatural....
Brad Field, Dallas, Texas

I was once very impressed by the Rams - right up until they lost to the Titans. No, not because they lost the game; I had expected the Titans to go down in flames from meeting such a talented team. No, I lost my respect for Dick and his boys (and this term is deliberate) after their back-to-back losses to the Titans and the Lions. Specifically, the fact that they filed complaints and whined more than the combined three losses by Jacksonville to the Titans. If your team can't suck up and admit they were simply out-played, they don't have what it takes to beat a team that does. The Rams have proven that all season, including their gimme win in the NFC championships that they certainly didn't earn.
Dave Parsons, Nashville, Tenn.

The Titans have the advantage in Super Bowl 34. Give credit to the coaching staff, coordinators and the Titan offense that succeeds and will continue to succeed in controlling the clock and putting enough points on the score board. Defense wins championships...and we all know the Titans have a great defensive staff and players that make this team champions. This defense has proven itself by defeating the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both of these teams were substantially great offensive threats. In the end, the Titan defense had come through.
Julian Taylor, Houston, Texas

The Titans will win rather easily, 34-21. They are at the top of their game, while the Rams barely squeaked by the Bucs who had to come from behind at home to beat the mediocre Redskins by a measly point. The Titans just look invincible right now.
Donna Fritz, Anaheim, Calif.

The Titans are a team of destiny. We have played all the teams in the NFL with at least the same or better record and beat them ALL (including St. Louis). Indianapolis had the same style of explosive offense as St. Louis and we beat the Colts on turf at their place. The "Music City Miracle" will continue and the Tennessee Titans will be Super Bowl Champs!
John Rolfe, Nashville, Tenn.

The Rams lost to Tennessee 24-21 after trailing 21-0 at halftime. They limited the Titans to 3 points in the second half. Despite numerous turnovers in there own end that led to 2 touchdowns for the Titans, the Rams still had a change to tie only to miss a 34 yard field goal. The Rams will not make the same mistakes this time and will be the Super Bowl Winner. I basically feel the Rams outplayed the Titans in their last match and have a great deal of more talent in key positions. Fred Miller will not make several false starts due to crowd noise or intimidation for Kearse. I could actually feel that the Rams were going to have a let down against the Bucs due to complacency, as they were on a high from beating Minnesota. The Bucs woke up a sleeping giant. Final Score: Rams 31 - Titans 17.
Tom Warner, Longmont, Colo.

Tennessee will come up on top at the end of this game! Their defense is gonna be too tough for the so-called best offense in the NFL! So what they had a great year. They just don't have the power and they'll come out on the bottom
Josh Medina, Los Angeles, Calif.

The distinctive smooth passing game of Kurt Warner and good reception percentage of Ricky Proehl will ultimately favor the St. Louis Rams to emerge victorious in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Danny, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I think the Rams will win the game, because in a recent study the team with the most INTs in the Super Bowl, usually wins the game. And with the Rams second in the league with 29 INTs, I feel pretty confident.
Marion Chapman, Los Angeles, Calif.

Tennessee in a dogfight! Sound, mistake free football wins games and that's why I think the Titans will pull this one out. Tennessee plays good defense (and the Bucs showed that a tough defense can make even the Rams 'O' look human) and will surely create some turnovers. Unlike Tampa Bay, the Titans can put the ball in the endzone as well. Jevon Kearse has been relatively quite after stomping on the Bills, so it's time for him to have another big game. I think the play of special teams could make or break this game for both teams. This one will be close, but the Titans will pull it out in the end.
Michael Roman, Leola, Penn.

The Titans victory in October was gift wrapped from the start. The Rams played their worst game of the season (by far) and still came within a blown 38-yarder of forcing overtime. Multiple turnovers, about 15 penalties (some of them huge drive killers) and deafening crowd noise all contributed to the Rams loss.

I think that the Titans are playing better now than then, but the Rams receivers can't be covered one-on-one--and the Titans can't change their scheme in a week.

The Rams have learned a lesson about being cocky and come out strong. Final score 28-17, Rams.
Dave Sheehan, Washington, D.C.
