INDIANAPOLIS (AP)-- Indianapolis running back Edgerrin James set an NFL record for touchdowns in a player's first two seasons when he scored the 35th of his career on a 52-yard touchdown pass Sunday.

James entered the game tied with Gale Sayers and Eric Dickerson, both NFL Hall of Famers, for most touchdowns in his first two seasons. He set the record when he took a screen pass from Peyton Manning and raced for the TD with 9:12 left in the first half.

James just missed setting another NFL record.

He needed 222 total yards from scrimmage to break Dickerson's record for a player's first two seasons. But after gaining 207 yards, the Colts pulled him with a 31-10 lead in the fourth quarter.

Most touchdowns, first two seasons
Player, Team  Seasons  TDs
Edgerrin James, IND  1999-00  35
Eric Dickerson, LA  1983-84  34
Gale Sayers, CHI  1965-66  34
Earl Campbell, HOU  1978-79  32

James also set club records for rushing yards in a season (1,709) and for most yards from scrimmage in a season, breaking Marshall Faulk's previous record of 2,227 set in 1998. James finished with 2,303.

Quarterback Peyton Manning set a club record for touchdowns in a season when he threw his fourth of the game Sunday with 7:47 left in the third quarter.

Manning's 33 touchdown passes broke Johnny Unitas' single-season record of 32 set in 1959.
