ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Norv Turner, fired earlier this month as head coach of the Washington Redskins, could land a job next season as offensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams and former protege Mike Martz.

Martz was quarterbacks coach under Turner in 1997 and '98 at Washington before joining the Rams as offensive coordinator. He said the two spoke on the telephone earlier this week, but not specifically about a position.

He added he and Turner speak "about once a week or once every other week."

"Shoot, I just asked him what he was doing and what he wanted to do," Martz said Friday. "I think he wants to be a head coach in this league, obviously, and if that should transpire for him, that's what he'll do.

"If not, he doesn't know for sure what he wants to do. We didn't get into all of that."

Martz said it wouldn't be strange having Turner, 49-59-1 in seven seasons with the Redskins with one trip to the playoffs, as an employee.

"Thinking about it, it might be a lot of fun," Martz said. "We had a lot of fun working together. Shoot, that's what I would enjoy most, having that other thought process in there to go over things."

Martz emphasized that everything at this stage was just "speculation," and added that he already has an offensive coordinator. Bobby Jackson holds that title, although Martz runs the offense and calls the plays on the field.

Martz, who has guided the Rams to an NFL-best 540 points and 33.7 average, has considered handing over play-calling chores to someone else next season so he can spend more time with the defense and special teams. Turner runs the same offensive system as the Rams, but with more emphasis on the running game.

That decision will be made after the season is over.

"That's way down the road, and a lot of things have got to happen," Martz said. "I haven't talked to him about that specifically.

"I just asked him what he was going to do and what he wanted to do."
