New York opens its training camp at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., on July 28.

    By Rich Loup, CNNSI.com

The days of optimism that ushered in Bill Parcells are mere memories for fans of the J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets! ... After Al Groh's forgettable 9-7 season, New York now turns its eyes to former Tampa Bay assistant coach Herman Edwards.

The Jets can make the playoffs if ... They can retool on the fly. New head coach Edwards and general manager Terry Bradway should give the Jets a decidedly different look after four years of Parcells and Groh in the thick of the decision-making process.

Pivotal games: The Jets open with consecutive games against Indianapolis and Oakland. New York must avoid injuries in the early portion of the schedule since its bye date isn't until Nov. 25.

On the hot seat: Vinny Testaverde hurt the Jets down the stretch with costly mistakes and had more interceptions (22) than touchdown passes (19). Testaverde will turn 38 in November and could watch Chad Pennington take his job if New York starts slowly.

Up-and-coming: First-round draft choice Santana Moss should get playing time, but will have to answer questions about his 5-foot-11, 184-pound frame. His 4.33 speed in the 40-yard dash could silence the critics.

Sports Illustrated's season preview will post Aug. 29.
