New England opens its training camp at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., on July 23.

    By Rich Loup, CNNSI.com

Quarterback Drew Beldsoe was handed a 10-year, $103 million contract in the offseason. Obviously, it was for combat pay; he spent most of 2000 running for his life and dodging human projectiles otherwise known as NFL defenders. In eight seasons, he's been sacked 257 times (100 since 1999).

The Patriots can make the playoffs if ... They find some help for Bledsoe, who was brutalized by lack of protection from a porous offensive line. New England allowed 48 sacks, eighth-most in the league. The Patriots also need a running game to take some of the pressure off Bledsoe. Defensively, New England must improve its rushing defense, which was 21st.

Pivotal games: A three-game road stretch at Indianapolis, Denver and Atlanta in late October and early November could make or break the Patriots if they're still in playoff contention.

On the hot seat: Terry Glenn has had a tumultuous offseason, fighting with management over his signing bonus after a run-in with the law. Injuries and controversy have dogged Glenn since he was labeled a "she" in his 1996 rookie season by former head coach Bill Parcells.

Up-and-coming: The Patriots hope Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour can step in and contribute immediately. New England managed just 29 sacks in 2000 and had trouble stopping the run.

Sports Illustrated's season preview will post Aug. 29.
