Biography: Three-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior with totals of 55 tackles/10 tackles loss/5 sacks. Junior numbers included 39/6.5/2 after 44/8/3 as a sophomore. Suffered a season ending knee injury at the end up his sophomore campaign which slowed him at the start of the 2010 season.
Positives: Explosive college pass rusher who makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Fires off the snap, crashes down the line of scrimmage to make plays and slices between double teams blocks into the backfield. Easily changes direction or immediately alters his angle of attack, displays a closing burst of speed and moves well in every area of the field. Relatively athletic, shows skill dropping off the line of scrimmage and effective in space. Quickly gets his hands up, knocks blockers off the line and plays with explosiveness.
Negatives: Undersized at defensive end and easily disrupted by blocks or knocked from his angle of attack. Lacks great pursuit speed and is not fast enough for a traditional linebacker position.
Analysis: Shelby was an impact player on the college level who consistently harassed opposing quarterbacks. He lacks the size for defensive end and speed for linebacker in the NFL yet could successfully line up as a situational pass rusher.
