Biography: Three-year starter awarded all-conference honors the past two years and named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2010. Senior totals included rushing numbers of 369 attempts/1690 yards/13 TDs with 36 receptions/361 yards/4 TDs as a receiver. Junior ground numbers included 340/1649/15. Experienced returning punts and kicks.
Positives: Small yet tough ballcarrier who consistently finds a way to produce on the field. Instinctive, displays great field vision and works hard to make plays. Runs low to the ground, quickly cuts back against the grain and is an elusive ballcarrier. Runs hard on the inside, aggressively puts his shoulders into defenders and falls forward when tackled. Solid pass catcher who occasionally lines up on the flanks. Very quick transitioning from making the catch to running after the reception. Helps the quarterback sell ball fakes, patient in all aspects of the game and incredibly quick.
Negatives: Not a strong runner and brought down at the point of attack by a single opponent. More quick than fast and does not have the ability to beat defenders into the open field.
Analysis: Rainey lacks classic size/speed numbers but gets the most from his physical skills. The ability to line up in the backfield as a ballcarrier, to be used in the slot as a receiver or as a return specialist gives him the upper hand in making a final roster this September.
