Biography: Four-year starter awarded all-conference honors since his sophomore season and named to numerous All-American teams the past two years. Senior totals included 54 tackles/2 interceptions/12 pass breakups after 44/4/7 the prior year. Also averaged 22.2 yards on eight kick returns as a junior.
Positives: Physically gifted defensive back with the versatility to line up at several positions in the secondary. Aggressive, explosive and forceful up the field. Effective on the blitz, gives effort defending the run and is a strong open-field tackler. Does a better than average job reading the action. Displays a terrific move to the throw, can burst to the action out of his plant and possesses a sense of timing. Locates the ball in the air, gets a jump on the throw and comes away with the interception. Stays with receivers out of breaks and uses his frame to outmuscle opponents.
Negatives: Quick out of his backpedal and tends to side shuffle down field. Loses transitioning off the line and struggles making plays with his back to the ball. Will peak at the quarterback and then lose the opponent. Has had several off the field issues which have raised red flags.
Analysis: Johnson was a consistent player at Montana and a lockdown corner opponents purposely stayed away from. He offers potential at both cornerback and safety and best fits a zone system or scheme that has him facing the action.
