Biography: Three-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior after totaling 54 tackles/13 tackles for loss/6 sacks with two pass breakups. Junior totals included 29/11.5/4.5.
Positives: Undersized yet quick defensive lineman who can be used as a three-technique tackle or two-gap end. Stout at the point of attack, shows power in his lower body and has the ability to push blockers off the line. Keeps his feet driving up the field, moves relatively well and fluid chasing the action out to the flanks. Flashes athleticism, covers a good amount of area on the field and effectively plays with good lean.
Negatives: Displays limited moves getting around opponents, does not effectively use his hands and easily disrupted from plays by the initial block. Lacks balance and on the ground too much. Tends to get tall and lets blockers inside him.
Analysis: Ward took his game to another level in 2011 and offers the movement skills and overall ability to be used in a variety of positions on the defensive line. He's a solid developmental prospect who should be stashed on a practice squad.
