Positives: Consistent pass-catching tight end/H-back who looks like a large possession receiver on the field. Fluid releasing off the line into routes, extends his hands and offers the quarterback a target. Makes the reception away from his frame. Plays with good balance and body control. Easily adjusts to the errant throw and looks the pass in. Smart football player who works hard in all aspects. Bends his knees, stays square and gives effort blocking.

Negatives: Lacks a burst in his game and cannot run to the deep throw. Marginal strength as a blocker.

Analysis: Smelley has size and athletic limitations but does the little things well and could make a roster as a third tight end/H-back and special teams player.
