PLAYERS
Biography: Four-year starter awarded all-conference honors since his freshman season. Named to several All-American teams as a senior
after totaling 75 tackles/2 interceptions/7 pass breakups. Junior totals included 76/1/9. Had 95 tackles as a sophomore, when
he also spent time at linebacker.
Positives: Well-built safety who is best defending the run. Quick up the field, lays his shoulders into ballcarriers and is a hard hitter. Remains disciplined with assignments, shows skill as an open-field tackler and is effective covering the pass between the numbers. Solid special teams player. Negatives: Hesitant reacting in coverage. Inefficient and does not always take correct angles to the action. Lacks great lateral speed. Analysis: Gumbs has been a productive run-defending safety the past four seasons and will get consideration as a backup in a zone system or as a conventional strong safety. Projection: FA |
