R.W. McQuarters

1st round, 28th overall
Cornerback, Oklahoma State
Comments: Poor man's Charles Woodson. Can play cornerback, receiver, and serve as return specialist. 49ers want him to focus on just returns and cornerback duties as a rookie. Will likely be nickel cornerback to start the season.

Jeremy Newberry

2nd round, 58th overall
Center, California
Comments: A favorite by 49er head coach Steve Mariucci, who coached him in college ... tough and nasty, can play guard or center, which gives him versatility for the 49ers ... will eventually be a starter at either spot and will add a toughness to 49ers' line.

Chris Ruhman

3rd round, 89th overall
Tackle, Texas A&M
Comments: Semi-shocker pick in Round 3 ... not very high on many draft boards ... decent run blocker but very raw in pass protection ... not known for great intensity and must get a little more physical ... will get look at backup right tackle and if he shows anything in camp, he should make team.

Lance Schulters

4th round, 119th overall
Safety, Hofstra
Comments: Small-college standout that will have chance to make this team on special-teams ability ... big hitter on small-college level and has good overall ball skills, but way behind in terms of sophisticated pass coverage and man-to-man skills ... looks like a developmental guy but only special teams right now.

Phil Ostrowski

5th round, 151st overall
Guard, Penn State
Comments: Not a great workout guy, but another player that plays better than his numbers ... has good movement in space, which is the 49er way ... both guards are aging, which gives him shot as backup ... pride and intensity should help him stick in some capacity.

Fred Beasley

6th round, 180th overall
Fullback, Auburn
Comments: Undersized fullback who didn't carry the ball a lot in college. Played in wide-open offense and catches the ball well out of the backfield. Has a chance to start as a rookie if he can block.

Ryan Thelwell

7th round, 215th overall
Receiver, Minnesota
Comments: Missed all of last season because of academic reasons, but was highly rated going into his senior year. Has time to develop behind solid receiver unit and compete for fifth receiver spot.
