The War Room takes a
look at the Chicago
Bears' 1998 draft picks. Curtis
Enis 1st round, 5th overall Running back, Penn State
Comments: Bears may not have wanted to make this pick, but
were asking for the world to move down in the draft. Trying to trade backup
Rashaan Salaam, so will
compete with Raymont
Harris for starting spot ... Enis is great back but Bears will have to
sort out crowded backfield. Tony
Parrish 2nd round, 35th overall Safety,
Washington Comments: Intimidator at strong safety. He is
much better close to the line of scrimmage, and may have some trouble
covering in the slot. especially in NFC Central where receiving units are
deep ... short for a safety (5-foot-10) -- a reach? Olin
Kreutz 3rd round, 64th overall Center, Washington
Comments: Played center in college, but could play guard in
NFL. If he's ready as a rookie, he could start at center, with Chris Villarrial moving
over to right guard, where they have big hole with free-agent loss of Todd Burger. Alonzo
Mayes 4th round, 94th overall Tight end, Oklahoma
State Comments: Failed substance test at the combine
dropped his stock, but he is an excellent athlete who has the skills/speed
to contribute. Big target with good hands who could be a key contributor as
a rookie. Chris
Draft 6th round, 157th overall Linebacker,
Stanford Comments: He is undersized but very athletic and
should contribute on special teams and in nickel defense situations ...
excellent space player ... good matchup vs. pass ... would have to fit as
role player. Patrick Mannelly 6th round, 189th
overall Tackle, Duke Comments: Somewhat unknown
player that was drafted for his long-snapping ability ... not a bona fide
position player but should make team as long snapper and No. 8 or 9
offensive lineman. Chad
Overhauser 7th round, 217th overall Tackle, UCLA
Comments: Very productive guy that could fit at guard or
tackle ... not a great athlete, but plays better than he tests ... great
work ethic and intensity and will probably stick as backup right tackle but
eventually may move to guard. Moses
Moreno 7th round, 232nd overall Quarterback,
Colorado State Comments: Highly productive player that was a
hot guy in late rounds ... Bears stole him from Arizona Cardinals ...
tough guy with good intangibles, not great arm strength but good feel for
passing game ... will compete for No. 3 quarterback spot with Steve Stenstrom.
