Draft Analysis: New York Giants

The War Room takes a
look at the New York
Giants' 1998 draft picks. Shaun
Williams 1st round, 24th overall Safety, UCLA
Comments: Odd pick by Giants, who went for best available
athlete instead of filling a serious need. Williams has good playmaking
skills, but isn't real flashy. Will compete with 1996 rookie Garnes at
strong safety. Joe
Jurevicius 2nd round, 55th overall Wide receiver,
Penn State Comments: Another odd pick here, as Giants need
playmaker, but grab possession type receiver in Jurevicius ... he does get
open, and has chance to be their No. 3 receiver ...has size to be an
H-back. Brian
Alford 3rd round, 70th overall Wide receiver,
Purdue Comments: Big, productive receiver that has
excellent speed and will stretch the defense ... has toughness to catch in
crowd, and may be sleeper-type pick ... help in vertical passing game and
should contribute in 3- and 4-receiver sets. Toby
Myles 5th round, 147th overall Tackle, Jackson
State Comments: Myles is a big, wide-body tackle who is
very raw. Will likely sit and wait behind right tackle Scott Gragg ...
Gragg is an unrestricted free agent next season, so team will start
developing Myles for the future. Todd
Pollack 6th round, 177th overall Tight end, Boston
College Comments: More of a receiving type tight end than
blocker, and may make his salary as a long snapper ... Giants need big
blocker at tight end and maybe Pollack can grow into the position while
he’s contributing as the team’s long snapper. Ben
Fricke 7th round, 213th overall Center, Houston
Comments: Short and squatty, but a real tough guy with a
great attitude ... position may be wide-open and he may have a shot to
compete for the backup role ... if Giants are right, could be nice surprise
pick.
