Terry
Fair 1st round, 20th overall Cornerback, Tennessee
Comments: Interesting pick here -- Fair got hot the week
before the draft, but wasn't expected to go here. He's small at 5-foot-9.
If he plays in nickel package as a third cornerback, Lions will have two
corners on the field at same time who are only 5-9, as starter Kevin Abrams lacks size too.
There are a lot of big receivers in the NFC Central. Germane
Crowell 2nd round, 50th overall Receiver, Virginia
Comments: If he comes ready to play, the No. 3 receiver
spot will be his. Underachieves at times, but has all the tools. Has to
start making the easy catches. If he's ready, quarterback Scott Mitchell may look a
lot better in 1998. Charlie
Batch 2nd round, 60th overall Quarterback, Eastern
Michigan Comments: Lions gave up a ton to trade up to get
him, which forced them to line-of-scrimmage some draft picks and not fill a
lot of defensive needs. The fans will be calling for him if Mitchell struggles.
Jamaal
Alexander 6th round, 185th overall Safety, Southern
Mississippi Comments: Lions ignored safeties in early rounds
but got interesting developmental guy late ... good measureables and
excellent speed but appears to be a straight-line guy that will need a lot
of work in coverage, not as physical as size would indicate, but he does
have some range and upside ... looks like a project. Chris
Liwienski 7th round, 207th overall Tackle, Indiana
Comments: Played tackle in college but will likely start
NFL career as backup guard ... not a great athlete but tough guy that
competes ... good short-area guy that will add some insurance to line.
