The War Room takes a
look at the Washington
Redskins' 1998 draft picks. Stephen
Alexander 2nd round, 48th overall Tight end,
Oklahoma Comments: Interesting pick here, as Alexander is
similar to starting tight end Jamie Asher. Will be No. 2
tight end. Better reciever than blocker. 'Skins will obviously use a lot
more 2-tight-end sets this season. Skip
Hicks 3rd round, 69th overall Tailback, UCLA
Comments: A steal a this point in the draft, but running
style is a lot like Stephen
Davis, who they don't like. Hicks catches the ball better, and will
likely be backup to starter Terry Allen, pushing Davis to
No. 3. Shawn
Barber 4th round, 113th overall Linebacker,
Richmond Comments: Athletic outside linebacker who played at
small school. He's a space guy, and needs to be uncovered, so look for him
to back up Derek Smith.
Will excel on special teams units and will contribute as third-down cover
linebacker on tight ends. Mark
Fischer 5th round, 140th overall Center,
Purdue Comments: Will move to center but has been guard and
tackle in college ... won't challenge for starting role early ... good
player but a project. Pat
Palmer 6th round, 170th overall Receiver, NW
Louisiana Comments: Versatile athlete that has experience at
quarterback and receiver, but not a lot of production in college in run
offense ... acrobatic type that can make big plays ... must get a little
more physical, but good developmental project. David Terrell
7th round, 191st overall Cornerback, Texas-El Paso
Comments: Has played both safety and cornerback on college level ...
will get shot at backup cornerback because of toughness and competitiveness
... not a real exciting guy, but could stick because of effort. Antwuane
Ponds 7th round, 206th overall Linebacker,
Syracuse Comments: Big-name middle linebacker that went late
in draft ... very productive college player that is up and down in terms of
intensity ... has a chance to make team as backup middle linebacker if he
has strong camp.
