Dr. Z's NFL Power Ratings

Posted: Thu Sept 10, 1998

Sports Illustrated NFL writer Paul Zimmerman ranks all 30 teams each week, exclusively for CNN/SI

Week 2
Rank TeamLW Comment
1. Green Bay Packers (1-0) 3 Should be even tougher once Dorsey Levens gets his sea legs back. Can you believe the Pack de-activated Raymont Harris last weekend?
2. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) 1 The mark of a good team is winning on an off day, which is my way of saying I'm not coming off them because of one scare.
3. Denver Broncos (1-0) 5 John Elway was sharp, but the running game was subpar, which means the O-line is now geared to pass protection.
4. San Francisco 49ers (1-0) 4 Everyone raves about Minnesota's trio of wideouts but I'll take Rice, Stokes and Owens.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)6 A good win on the road against a fired up Ravens team.
6. Minnesota Vikings (1-0) 8 Yes, I picked the Vikes to lose to the Bucs, but honestly, would you still like me if I were right all the time?
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1)2 Lots of work to do, and the Bucs will probably be 0-2 after their visit to Lambeau, but this is still a very solid operation.
8. New York Giants (1-0) 7 Best defensive lineman I saw all weekend was LE Michael Strahan. Second-best was RE Chad Bratzke. Very serious front four here.
9. Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) 9 The offense bores me silly; the defense, with the best rush package in the league, is exciting.
10. Tennessee Oilers (1-0) 11 An active defense, with fine, playmaking free safety Marcus Robertson.
11. New York Jets (0-1) 12 Tremendously impressive OT loss to the Niners.Still looking for a pass rush, though.
12. Miami Dolphins (1-0) 14 Dan Marino threw five passes in the second half. Can the running game really set the tempo? We'll see.
13. Seattle Seahawks (1-0) 16 Why didn't I rate Warren Moon's feats among my top passing performances last weekend? Because I didn't see the game.
14. New England Patriots (0-1) 13 Made a courageous run at the Broncos, then self-destructed. Rookie runner Robert Edwards finally showed something.
15. Washington Redskins (0-1) 10 Norv Turner's instant decision to bench Gus Frerotte in favor of Trent Green shows that there's a lot bubbling under the surface here.
16. Dallas Cowboys (1-0) 20 If Dallas does it in Denver this weekend, then I'll be impressed.
17. Detroit Lions (0-1) 15 Now that their traditional loss at Green Bay is behind them, the Lions can get serious about the season.
18. Buffalo Bills (0-1) 19 Tough to get a reading on a game like last week's, which was dictated by the heat.
19. Atlanta Falcons (1-0) 18 So what's the deal? They win and they drop one spot? I just think Carolina is worse than we gave them credit for.
20. Baltimore Ravens (0-1) 23 Harbaugh gets hurt and they still make a run at the Steelers. Remember, though, that was their Super Bowl.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1) 17 Don't know if this team can ever open it up with Neil O'Donnell at QB.
22. Chicago Bears (0-1) 28 A dizzying climb from 28th to 22nd. See what one inspired loss can do for you?
23. San Diego Chargers (1-0) 26 Sorry, but I think Ryan Leaf is still many interceptions away from being the savior of the franchise.
24. Indianapolis Colts (0-1) 27 Not the same feeling here. Peyton Manning will come along faster than people expect.
25. Arizona Cardinals (0-1) 22 I'm sure that the tremendous thrashing by the Cowboys was a one-game aberration, but a little voice is whispering, "What if it wasn't?"
26. Oakland Raiders (0-1) 24 Just when the defense got fixed, well, sort of, the boat sprang a new leak: a line that gave up 10 sacks.
27. Carolina Panthers (0-1) 21 After spending more than $100 million for free agents in the offseason, the Panthers are in the same place they were last year at this time, 0-1 and scratching their heads.
28. Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) 25 Bobby Hoying's strange collapse has created a hollow spot in a team that was shaky to begin with.
29. New Orleans Saints (1-0) 30 Win one game, lose one QB. At this rate they'll be 16-0 in December with Mike Ditka taking the snaps.
30. St. Louis Rams (0-1) 29 Why were the top two preseason runners, Robert Holcombe and Greg Hill, deactivated in favor of Jerald Moore, who fumbled three times?
