DiNardo to coach Birmingham entry in XFL

Posted: Tues August 1, 2000 at 5:46 p.m. EDT

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Ticker) -- The Birmingham entry into the newly formed XFL today hired Gerry DiNardo as its first coach.

DiNardo was the coach at Louisiana State from 1995-98 before being fired on November 15. He did not coach the final game of the season against Arkansas and posted a record of 28-16-1 at the school before his dismissal.

The 47-year-old DiNardo came to LSU after four seasons as head coach at Vanderbilt. His career record is 51-49-1.

DiNardo was a guard at Notre Dame from 1972-74 and spent eight years as an assistant coach on the collegiate level. He was an assistant at Colorado from 1982-90 before taking over as coach at Vanderbilt in 1991.

The XFL also announced today that Tim Berryman will be the team's vice president and general manager and that Bob Gates will serve as player personnel director.

The XFL is the brainchild of wrestling impresario Vince McMahon and begins play in February 2001. Birmingham is one of eight charter cities in the league, which already has a contract with NBC.
