Veto power: The Clinton speech bumped the scandal-prone Cowboys to basic cable CNN/SI

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC preempted coverage of "Monday Night Football" to show President Clinton's address to the nation about his testimony to a grand jury.

ABC moved coverage of an exhibition game between the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots at 10 p.m. EDT to ESPN2 -- also a Disney-owned network.

ABC Sports spokesman Mark Mandel said it was the first time a "Monday Night Football" telecast has been moved to another network, but that ABC has preempted coverage in the past for major news stories.

"News events will always take precedence over any other programming," Mandel said. "We always bow to decisions of news executives in these manners. "Fortunately we had an outlet available in ESPN2. This is the best of both worlds."
