DE Anthony Smith retires from Broncos Posted: Saturday August 22, 1998 03:47 PM
ENGLEWOOD, Coloroda (AP) -- Defensive end Anthony Smith, who signed with the Broncos last month after eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders, retired Friday. "He indicated to the coach today that he had played a long time and had played enough," said Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano. The Broncos said they waived Smith, meaning the team has 14 more players to release before the Tuesday deadline to whittle its roster to 60. Smith, a No. 1 draft choice of the Raiders in 1990, recorded 54.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in his career. Last year, he played 13 games and had 6.5 sacks. Smith has had at least six sacks in each NFL season he has played except in 1996 when he had two sacks.
