Tough break Jaguars place Stewart on injured reserve; Howard signedPosted: Wednesday September 23, 1998 03:50 PM
JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars placed running back James Stewart on the injured reserve list Wednesday and signed former Michigan tailback Chris Howard to take his place on the roster. Stewart was diagnosed with a partially torn ligament in his left knee Tuesday. He was hurt in Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, ending what had begun as a solid season for the fourth-year veteran out of Tennessee. Through two weeks, he had 218 yards rushing. His loss left the Jaguars with a pair of rookie tailbacks -- Fred Taylor and Tavian Banks. "Chris Howard is a young man and he certainly still is developmental," coach Tom Coughlin said. "A couple weeks into our system and I think he'll be a guy who can be counted on. But I'm not going to say we're done with our evaluations just yet." Howard was the Denver Broncos' fifth-round draft pick, but he had a bad preseason, fumbling five times in two games. The Broncos released him from their practice squad Tuesday, allowing the Jaguars to step in.
