Back again? White 'intrigued' by possibility of returnPosted: Monday February 01, 1999 02:38 AM
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Defensive end Reggie White said Sunday he is retired from football, but he's still "intrigued" about the possibility of returning for another season with the Green Bay Packers under new coach Ray Rhodes. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, however, quoted one of White's agents, Max Siegel, as saying White is "pretty content" with his retirement. White's comments came as he appeared on the Fox network show before Sunday's Super Bowl game in Miami. "When Ray got the job, if anyone else had gotten the job I wouldn't have been intrigued," White said. "I've really been praying about it and thinking about it. Right now I'm retired." White had announced his retirement after the Packers lost to Denver a year ago in the Super Bowl, but he later changed his mind and returned to have an excellent season, finishing with 16 sacks to lead the NFC and winning Defensive Player of the Year honors from The Associated Press. "I talked to Reggie two days ago and I asked him how he felt about Ray (Rhodes)," Siegel said. "He thinks that Ray is going to do an outstanding job there. He was just pleased at the choice that the Packers made to have Ray there." The Packers made White and four other players available Jan. 15 to the expansion draft for the Cleveland Browns. If the Browns were to take White, they would have to assume the final three years of the five-year, $19 million contract extension he signed in December 1996. But Siegel said money would not be a major consideration in White's decision. "If there would be anything that would cause him to reconsider playing, it would definitely be his relationship to the organization, and it wouldn't be a situation where they threw a lot of money on the table," he said. "He's done very well with his money." Rhodes, as defensive coordinator, helped persuade White to sign with the Packers as a free agent in 1993.
