Connecticut must clean up its act State officials looking at alternate sites for Patriots' parkPosted: Tuesday February 02, 1999 07:43 PM
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- State officials are talking about the possibility of finding an alternative location in Hartford for the New England Patriots' stadium if the proposed waterfront site cannot be cleaned up in a timely and cost-effective manner, according to a published report. Friday is the deadline for the state and the team to sign a stadium development agreement -- a binding contract obligating the state to finance a $374 million stadium in downtown Hartford and requiring the Patriots to play there for 30 years. But the Hartford Courant, citing sources it did not identify, reported Tuesday that state officials will consider an alternative site if they cannot reach a deal soon with the owners of a steam plant that must be relocated before the stadium can be built. A vacant, city-owned site just north of Interstate 84 is a leading contender as a replacement site, the paper reported. Gov. John G. Rowland has previously dismissed the idea of an alternate site for the stadium, pointing out that it is to be part of a larger waterfront development known as Adriaen's Landing.
