Colts sign Panthers defensive end King Posted: Sunday February 14, 1999 02:45 PM
INDIANAPOLIS (CNN/SI) -- The Indianapolis Colts have signed Panthers defensive end Shawn King to a three-year contract, making the fourth-year star the latest Carolina player to join the Colts. King, 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds, is now reunited with former Panthers general manager Bill Polian and former Panthers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, now in the same positions with the Colts. "I felt right at home," King told the Indianapolis Star of walking into the Colts' facilities. "The guys who I know can make a difference are here." A second-round draft pick by Carolina in 1995, King has played in 39 games, all with the Panthers. He missed all of last season after tearing his right biceps muscle in preseason. Polian told the Star he signed King because he can rush the passer and defend against the run well. "We feel Shawn is a prototype defensive end with good size and speed," Polian said. King told the Star his four years with the Panthers were "rocky," including a six-game suspension in 1997 for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. "That was two years ago and I made a mistake," King told the newspaper.
