49ers' Stokes to visit with Panthers Posted: Monday February 22, 1999 02:42 PM
CHARLOTTE (CNN/SI) -- 49ers wide receiver J.J. Stokes is tentatively scheduled to visit the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, according to a published report. Monday's Charlotte Observer quotes Panthers coach George Seifert as saying that the team is interested in Stokes but reiterating that re-signing free agent Raghib "Rocket" Ismail is his first priority. "I obviously know J.J., but I think it's premature to say there's anything other than conversation right now," Seifert told the newspaper. "It's the same thing with many positions, where we're talking to players but there haven't been any commitments from the standpoint of Carolina or the players." Seifert coached Stokes in San Francisco in 1995 and '96, and said the team is also trying to re-sign tackle Blake Brockermeyer, who is visiting the Jets on Monday and the Browns on Tuesday. The Observer reported that Stokes' agent, Tom Condon, said he would likely visit Pittsburgh and Philadelphia after visiting Charlotte. He said the 49ers want to re-sign Stokes despite salary-cap limitations. Stokes, 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, had 63 catches for 770 yards and eight touchdowns last season with the 49ers. The Panthers are also pursuing Falcons defensive end Antonio Edwards, who is expected to choose between Carolina and Atlanta in the next day or so. Carolina has reportedly offered a two-year, $1.4 million contract, but the Falcons have yet to say if they'll counter with their own offer.
