PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers running back Jerome Bettis remained hospitalized Wednesday following emergency surgery to remove his appendix.

Bettis, 27, experienced sudden stomach pain Tuesday while working out in Los Angeles and underwent the operation at the UCLA Medical Center.

Steelers trainer John Norwig said Bettis was doing well and should be completely healed before training camp begins July 29 at St. Vincent College in Latrobe.

Bettis has been training with Bob Kersee, who coached the late Florence Griffith Joyner.
