Patriots release defensive back Canty Posted: Tuesday June 08, 1999 07:41 PM
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Cornerback Chris Canty, New England's first-round draft choice in the 1997 draft, was released by the Patriots on Tuesday. Canty started the first nine games at right corner last season for the Patriots, who needed salary cap room to sign their 1999 draft choices. He had 79 tackles, one interception and three sacks in two seasons with the Patriots. Canty, who played at Kansas State, was drafted 29th overall in 1997. Canty also struggled for most of the two years."Chris did not take full advantage of his opportunity with the Patriots," coach Pete Carroll said. "I'm encouraged by the work and commitment shown by many of our players and expect great competition at that position in camp this year." Among the veterans at right cornerback are Israel, 1998 first-round pick Tebucky Jones and Kato Serwanga. All-Pro Ty Law plays the other cornerback position. Canty, 23, had 79 tackles, one interception and three sacks in his two seasons. The interception came against Peyton Manning, the top pick in last year's NFL draft, in the Patriots' home opener against Indianapolis.
Canty also played last season on special teams, returning 11 kickoffs
for 198 yards and 16 punts for 170 yards. He had eight special teams
tackles.
